Astana Pro Team rider Alexey Lutsenko grabbed 3rd place (+0:39) at the prestigious classics race Dwars door Vlaanderen (Roesalare – Waregem, 203.4km).
The Kazakh rider was part of a four-men break which snuck away on the famous Paterberg climb.
“There were a lot of attacks in the final part of the race. In Oude Kwaremont a group of around 20 riders escaped. I was able to follow them with Matti Breschel. It was a good situation for us. I decided to support Matti, working in front of the pack and helping to increase our lead. Gilbert launched a strong attack on Patenberg and only myself, Lampaert and Durbridge followed him. It was a hard race and I am quite happy with the result,” said Lutsenko.
The tag team of Quick-Step Floors was in control as Gilbert threw in another attack with 9km to go and Lutsenko was able to answer. The pace then quickened and at the 5km banner, Lampaert laid down the race-winning move.
Lutsenko rode the Gallium Pro for this course, which is known for its pitchy climbs, cobbles and narrow corners.
“I really like the northern classics, especially the cobblestone races. I have always enjoyed racing here since I was Under 23 rider. And I know, that a good bike is a key of success in this kind of races. It was my first time I used Argon 18 Gallium Pro on the cobblestones and I can say I am impressed. It gave me full control on the cobbled climbs as well as a possibility to be fast on descents and flat parts of the race. Indeed, Argon 18 Gallium Pro was a part of my success today,” said Lutsenko.
“I am really happy with Alexey and with the whole team,” said Sports Director Lars Michaelsen. “We had a strong and smart race. Alexey handled himself very well and he showed his potential in this type of race. We are looking forward to the next two races and hope our team will fight for another good result.”
Astana Pro Team continues a big week of racing with two World Tour classics – Record Bank E3 Harelbeke on Friday and Gent Wevelgem on Sunday.
